The Anmeldung checklist: City Registration in Germany
City Registration (the Anmeldung) is the first bureaucratic step almost every relocating professional has to clear in Germany. Skip it and you cannot open a bank account, get a tax ID, or sign up for health insurance.
What you need
- Your passport or national ID
- A signed Wohnungsgeberbestätigung from your landlord
- A completed registration form (available at most Bürgeramt offices)
Booking the appointment
Slots fill up weeks in advance in Berlin, Munich, and Hamburg. Book the moment you have a signed lease, and set a calendar reminder: German law requires registration within 14 days of moving in.
Download the forms
Get a head start by filling in what you can before your appointment. The city registration form and the supplementary sheet (needed when other family members or additional addresses apply) below are the official blank forms; the Wohnungsgeberbestaetigung is a Migrapal reference sample, so confirm your landlord uses the current version from your Buergeramt.
